VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova wrapped up a competitive weekend of action at the Villanova and Delaware Invite, taking part in three matches across singles and doubles play.
The Wildcats opened on Friday against Delaware, where senior
Maggie Gehrig battled through a three-set thriller to earn a hard-fought 6-2, 1-6, 10-7 victory. Freshman
Riley Cicero followed with another clutch performance, edging out her opponent in three sets, 7-5, 4-7, 10-7, to secure her first win of the weekend.
On Saturday, Villanova found success in both singles and doubles. The pairing of
Lauren Monti and
Miriam Gondorova delivered a strong showing, capturing a 7-5 win on the doubles court. Gerhig and Cicero continued their momentum with singles victories, while Monti capped off the day by earning her second win in a tight three-set battle.
The Wildcats closed the Invite on Sunday with two more singles triumphs, courtesy of their freshman duo.
Alina Kornyeva cruised to a straight-sets victory (7-6, 6-1), while Cicero once again showed her resilience, pulling out her second three-set win of the weekend by a 6-2, 3-6, 10-4 margin.
Villanova will look to carry this momentum into next weekend when they compete at the Navy and Gold Invitational in Annapolis, Md., beginning Friday, September 26.
