FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Villanova field hockey team dropped a 5–2 road contest to Fairfield on Friday (Sept. 5) at University Field in Fairfield, Conn.
The Stags struck early, scoring twice in the opening quarter and adding another goal midway through the second to take a 3–0 lead into halftime. Villanova gained momentum after the break. Just minutes into the third quarter,
Gemma Lysaght found the back of the cage off a setup from
Carey Werley to cut the deficit to two.
Fairfield threatened to extend its lead with a penalty stroke, but goalkeeper
Sophie Volkel came up with a brilliant save to keep the Wildcats within striking distance.
In the fourth, the teams traded goals before Fairfield sealed the game with an empty-netter.
