WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Villanova University women's tennis team picked up their first victory on the season by defeating Sacred Heart, 4-0, before falling to Army.
Sacred Heart
Villanova took control early by securing the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. At No. 2 doubles, sophomore
Olivia Corcoran and junior
Jenna Stevens picked up a 6-3 victory, while juniors
Miriam Gondorova and
Lauren Monti followed with a hard-fought 6-3 win on court three.
The Wildcats maintained their momentum in singles play, closing out the match with straight-set victories. Gondorova earned a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, and Monti extended the lead with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 4. The match was clinched at No. 6 singles, where junior
Maddie Hills secured a 6-2, 6-3 straight-set win.
Army
Army claimed the doubles point to open the match, as the pairings of Gehrig/Callahan and Stevens/Corcoran were defeated.
The Black Knights carried that momentum into singles play, earning wins on courts three, four, and six to clinch the match. Stevens fell at No. 3 singles, followed by a loss from Monti at No. 4. Hills battled on court six but ultimately dropped her match in straight sets.
