Wildcats to Welcome UConn for BIG EAST Home Opener

Huhskies and 'Cats to meet at 3 p.m. Friday

VILLANOVA, Pa. – A pair of East Division rivals are set to meet Friday in a pivotal early season conference clash when Villanova (4-4-1 overall, 0-2-0 BIG EAST) hosts UConn (4-4-1 overall, 0-1 BIG EAST) at the Higgins Soccer Complex.

Kickoff is set for 3:05 p.m. and the live stream will air on ESPN+.

This is the BIG EAST home opener for the Wildcats, who fell at St. John's (2-1) and Xavier (2-0) in their first two conference matchups last month.

"We always want to defend our home field," said Villanova Mark Fetrow. "We have played well at Higgins, and we will need to continue to do that as we enter the Big East portion of our home schedule."

The Wildcats have won four of six non-conference games on West Campus, including a come from behind 4-2 win over Drexel in their most recent appearance there (Sept. 22).

The Huskies have rallied after opening the regular season with three consecutive losses at Syracuse (2-1), at UMass (3-1) and at home in Storrs, Conn., to Fairfield (1-0). After falling to Seton Hall in their BIG EAST opener (2-1), UConn downed Siena 3-1 last time out. It is 4-1-2 over its last seven outings.

Villanova has been idle this week since dropping a 2-0 decision at Xavier on Saturday night. The focus in training has centered on re-establishing a defensive identity that carried the 'Cats at the outset of the 2026 regular season.

"It's back to basics," said Fetrow.

As the calendar page turns to October, the Wildcats are keenly aware that banking points in league play is critical to becoming one of the four teams that advances to the BIG EAST Tournament next month. Six regular season games remain on the slate. Four of those will be at Higgins. Providence visits on Oct. 10 followed by nationally ranked Georgetown on Oct. 24 and Akron on Oct. 31.

The Wildcats will also host non-conference foe New Haven on Tuesday, Oct. 6, giving them three straight matches on the pitch at the Higgins Soccer Complex.

Redshirt junior Luke Martelli continues to serve as a catalyst for the Wildcats after missing much of the last two seasons with knee injuries. On Monday, the native of Kinzers, Pa., was named Philly Soccer Six Player of the Week after registering a goal and an assist in the win over the Dragons. He leads the 'Cats in scoring with seven points.

Senior forward Javon Daniels moved into the starting lineup for the first time last Saturday night in Cincinnati after a strong effort in the Drexel match. Senior forward Sam Nyenka has also made his presence felt on the attack of late, scoring his first goal of the season in the win over the Dragons last week.

Junior goalkeeper produced another strong outing at Xavier, making 11 saves. He sports a 1.00 goals against average while starting eight of the 'Cats nine games in 2026. He also has 55 saves on his ledger.
