FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.—Graduate thrower
Maria Deaviz (Souderton, Pa.) tied her school record in the shot put with a mark of 16.76 meters at the Tyson Invitational on Saturday morning. Competing at the site of this year's indoor NCAA Championships, Deaviz came in third in her signature event at the Lance Harter Track at the Randal Tyson Track Center. She continues to rank in the top 20 on this year's NCAA Division I descending order list.
Deaviz has competed five times this season and has recorded the five longest throws in school history in those outings while either setting or tying a record each time out. Her mark of 16.76 meters on Saturday matches her indoor PR which she first achieved at the Penn Invitational last month. Her best throw in Arkansas came on the second of her six attempts on the day.
The consistency of Deaviz' performances this season has been as remarkable as the records she is setting. She first broke the Villanova school record in her Wildcats debut when she threw 16.15 meters at the Penn Select on January 10. One week later, she matched the exact same mark at Penn State.
The next time Deaviz broke what was now her own record came on January 24 at the Penn Elite when she threw 16.46 meters. She topped it at 16.76 meters back at Penn six days later. After two weeks off, Deaviz returned to action on Saturday and promptly measured throws of exactly 16.46 meters and 16.76 meters on her first two attempts of the day.
