VILLANOVA, Pa. — The Villanova water polo team fell to No. 23 California Baptist 18-15 in the opener of the Wildcat Invite Friday night.
The 'Cats (2-3) scored nine goals in the second half, including six in the third quarter to stay in the game with the Lancers (6-2).
VU scored three times in the first quarter, capped by
Layla Canales' sixth goal of the season.
Heading into the second quarter trailing 6-3, CBU outscored Villanova 4-3 to take a 10-6 lead into halftime.
The 'Cats came out hot in the second half, led by two goals and an assist by
Coco Jones.
Ella Mattocks scored with under a second remaining in the third quarter to bring the contest to 14-12 heading into the final quarter.
Villanova scored three times in the fourth quarter, two of which were netted by
Tessa Pettit, but four Lancers goals gave the visitors the victory.
