PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Villanova women's tennis team continues its spring slate on Wednesday, March 18, traveling across the city to face Philadelphia rival Saint Joseph's. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m.
The Wildcats return to action riding momentum from a strong weekend performance, where they earned a 5-2 road victory over Loyola Maryland. The win marked Villanova's eighth of the season, improving its record to 8-5 overall.
Villanova set the tone early in its last outing by sweeping all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. At No. 1, Emi Callahan and Maggie Gehrig battled to a 7-5 win, while Jenna Stevens and Lauren Monti followed with a convincing 6-2 victory at No. 2. Miriam Gondorova and Olivia Corcoran completed the sweep with a 6-1 result in the No. 3 spot.
In singles play, the Wildcats captured three matches to clinch the team victory. Gehrig led the way at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-4 straight-set win, while Gondorova delivered a dominant 6-1, 6-1 performance at No. 3. Alina Kornyeva sealed the match at No. 6, earning a 6-3, 7-6 victory to secure the deciding point.
Saint Joseph's enters Wednesday's matchup with a 1-8 record on the season. The Hawks opened the year with a win over Oral Roberts but have dropped their last eight matches, facing a challenging schedule that includes Penn, Drexel, Bucknell, NJIT, Lehigh, Navy and George Washington.
Villanova will look to extend its winning streak to five matches as it takes on the Hawks in a midweek city showdown.
