VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Villanova women's tennis team returns to the Villanova Tennis Complex this weekend to host BIG EAST opponent St. John's on Sunday, March 22, at 11:00 a.m.
The Wildcats come home riding a five-match winning streak, most recently earning a dominant 7-0 sweep over Saint Joseph's on the road to improve to 9-5 this season.
Villanova set the tone early in its last outing by securing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
Emi Callahan and
Maggie Gehrig delivered a commanding 6-0 victory at the top spot, while
Olivia Corcoran and
Miriam Gondorova followed with a 6-3 win to clinch the point. The No. 2 match went unfinished, tied at 5-5.
That momentum carried into singles play, where the Wildcats swept all six matches in convincing fashion. Gehrig led the charge with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2, and Gondorova added a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3.
At the top of the lineup, Corcoran rebounded from a first-set loss to secure a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1.
Jenna Stevens contributed with a three-set victory at No. 4 (6-0, 4-6, 6-3), while
Lauren Monti rallied at No. 5 to win in a super tiebreak, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (7).
Alina Kornyeva capped the sweep with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 6.
St. John's enters Sunday's matchup at 9-5 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST play. After opening the season with a loss to FGCU, the Red Storm responded with wins over Miami (OH) and Fairfield, and have since added victories against Rider, Monmouth, Hofstra, UConn, New Haven, Providence, and most recently Bethune-Cookman. St. John's holds a 2-4 record on the road this season, while Villanova is unbeaten at home.
The Wildcats will look to extend their winning streak to six matches as they take on the Red Storm in conference action.
