VILLANOVA ADVANCES TO CHAMPIONSHIP GAME WITH WIN OVER SETON HALL

Wildcats Will Take On UConn In Monday’s Big East Final

UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- On Sunday night in the semifinal round of the BIG EAST Tournament, the No. 2 seed Villanova Wildcats led wire to wire and registered a 62-48 win over the No. 3 seed Seton Hall Pirates. With the victory, Villanova improves to 25-6 on the year, while Seton Hall falls to 19-12.

Villanova will now advance to Monday night's BIG EAST championship game and take on the No. 1 and undefeated Connecticut Huskies. Tip-off time is set for 7 p.m.

The Wildcats started fast racing to a 12-0 lead. Sophomore guard Jasmine Bascoe and senior forward Denae Carter carried the early load for Villanova with Bascoe scoring seven of the 12 points and Carter the other five.

Seton Hall missed its first seven shots and didn't score a field goal until the 4:54 mark of the opening quarter. The Pirates would make just 2-of-10 from the field in the first quarter and Villanova led 18-7 after one.

Villanova held a 22-15 lead when the Wildcats went on a 14-1 run to open-up a 36-16 advantage with 2:33 to play in the first half. Five different Wildcats scored in the spurt led by junior center Brynn McCurry who had five points on a short jumper and a conventional three-point play.

Seton Hall responded and scored the final nine points of the half to cut the Villanova lead to 36-25 at intermission.

The Wildcats scored the first six points of the third quarter en route to a 15-5 run that propelled them to a 51-30 advantage. McCurry was outstanding in the spurt, scoring six of her team's 15 points.

As they did at the end of the first half, Seton Hall finished the third quarter strong, scoring the final six points of the period to make it a 51-37 game after three.

After Seton Hall's Shailyn Pinckney scored on a 15-foot jump shot to start the fourth quarter and cut the lead to 51-39, Villanova scored seven straight points to put the game away and take a 58-39 lead with 5:18 to play.

McCurry led the Wildcats in the win with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while Bascoe tallied 15 points. Carter was the third Wildcat in double figures with 11 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds.

Seton Hall was paced by Zahara Bishop and Jordana Codio who had 13 points each.

For the game, Villanova was 24-of-61 from the field (39.3%), 5-of-28 from three-point range (17.9%) and 9-of-9 from the foul line (100.0%), while the Pirates shot 32.7 percent from the floor (17-of-52), 18.8 percent from long distance (3-of-16) and 57.9 percent from the foul line (11-of-19). Seton Hall owned a slight 38-36 advantage on the backboards.
