Baseball Sweeps Boston College, 6-3, 10-8

The Villanova baseball team extended its winning streak to six games this afternoon by sweeping a Big East doubleheader from the host Boston College Eagles. Villanova won the seven-inning game by a score of 6-3 and the Cats earned a 10-8 victory in the nightcap.

In game one, Villanova scored three runs in the top of the seventh to pull-out the win.Sophomore Aaron Krawiec pitched six innings to gain the victory. The lefty from Hamburg, N.Y. allowed three runs on seven hits, while striking out three. At the plate, senior shortstop Pat Kane went 2-for-4 with a double, while senior centerfielder Mike Perate, freshman first baseman Rob Cafiero, sophomore leftfielder Dave Pizzini and senior rightfielder Joe DelVecchio had two hits each for Villanova. Junior Brian Manning came on to pitch the seventh inning to gain the save. In his one inning of work, Manning struck out two and allowed no hits.

After one inning of play in game two, Boston College led 6-3, which is how the score stayed until Villanova exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth. The Eagles tallied two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth, but that was the final runs of the game, as the Wildcats tallied the 10-8 victory. Sophomore second baseman Matt Longo had a strong game for Villanova, going two-for-five with two runs, four RBI a double and a home run. Sophomore catcher Dan Glover also tallied a home run for Villanova. Junior Drew Kirchner came on relief of starter Brian Buckingham and pitched well. Kirchner hurled 5.1 innings, giving up just two runs on three hits. Manning pitched the final three innings to earn his second save of the day, as he allowed no runs and no hits in his outing.

Villanova returns to action on Saturday, April 3 when the Wildcats travel to the Steel City to play the University of Pittsburgh in a Big East doubleheader beginning at noon.
