VILLANOVA, Pa. - Ingo Dittell came off the bench to score a pair of second half goals that provided the margin of victory as the Seton Hall Pirates defeated the Villanova Wildcats 3-1 in a contest played Saturday afternoon at the Villanova Soccer Complex.
Seton Hall carried the play in the first half, outshooting the Wildcats 15-3 in the first stanza. The Pirates move in front when junior Luke Serafin put the ball past Villanova freshman goalkeeper John Williams at the 12:36 mark. Greg Strohmann was credited with an assist on the play.
Villanova put pressure on Seton Hall goalkeeper Alex McDonald early in the second half and nearly scored when a Jim Curtin header hit the post in the 60th minute. But it was Seton Hall that scored next. Dittell accepted a pass from Alim Ibragimov, and then struck a low shot from near the top of the box to beat John Williams to make it 2-0 at the 74:34 mark.
The Wildcats drew within a goal at the 80:59 mark. Freshman Chris Edgar headed the ball toward classmate Dan Massimini, whose shot through traffic got past McDonald. This marked the third straight game where Edgar has scored a point.
Dittell completed the scoring when he took a pass from Strohmann and found the back of the net at the 88:56 mark.
Seton Hall improves to 11-6-0 overall, 6-5-0 in the Big East while the Wildcats are now 5-9-2 overall and 2-7-2 in the conference.
