On Friday, Sept. 7, at the Temple Invitational held in Philadelphia, Pa., the Villanova volleyball team split their two matches on the night dropping a heartbreaking loss to St. Peter's College in the opening match, 3-2, and taking a three game sweep from Lehigh University, 3-0, in the nightcap. With the split, the Wildcats' record now stands at 2-3 on the season.
In the opening match against St. Peter's, both teams would alternate wins setting up the decisive final game. With the score tied 14-14 in the final set, St. Peter's would serve out the next two points to gain the victory. In the loss, Villanova was led by outside hitter Leah Mathews (Poway, CA/ Our Lady of Peace) who tallied 25 kills and 14 digs. Seniors Libby Sybilrud (Atlanta, GA/ Marist School) added 16 kills and 9 digs and Dana Jones (Mt. Kisco, NY/ Fox Lane) chipped in with 14 kills.
In the final match of the evening, the Wildcats swept Lehigh University in three straight games by the scores of 30-24, 30-26 and 30-26. Trailing 22-15 in the third set, the 'Cats exploded with a 15-4 run to close out the match. Villanova was led once again by the offensive production of Mathews and Sybilrud as well as freshman Katie Lanting (Loveland, CO/ Alexander Dawson School). Sophomore setter Jennifer Edwards (Valencia, CA/ Valencia) played well anchoring the offense down the stretch registering 31 assists and nine digs for the Wildcats.
Villanova will return to action tomorrow morning when they take on the University of Delaware at 10:00 A.M. and host Temple Owls at 4:00 P.M.
