BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Brooks Sales' layup at the buzzer broke a 75-all tie Tuesday night and lifted Villanova to a 77-75 victory over Virginia Tech.
Virginia Tech (6-11, 0-5 Big East) extended a 43-38 halftime lead to 10 points early in the second half, but Villanova closed the gap with five consecutive free throws.
The lead then changed 11 times before the Hokies tied the score with 0:34 to go on a free-throw by Terry Taylor.
Villanova's Ricky Wright missed a jumper with 0:03 left, but Sales got the rebound and made a basket for the win.
Villanova (10-4, 3-2 Big East) was led by Gary Buchanan with 34 points and 8 rebounds. Derrick Snowden and Wright each scored 11 points, while Sales finished with 6 points and 12 rebounds.
Carlos Dixon had 25 points for Virginia Tech. Terry Taylor had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Brian Chase scored 13 points and Eric Branham added 10.
