PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Derrick Snowden went coast-to-coast for the game-tying layup with 2.5 seconds left in regulation and Villanova scored 10 of the first 12 points of overtime to defeat Georgetown 83-72 on Saturday.
Ricky Wright led five Villanova players in double figures with 22 points. Brooks Sales had 16 points and Snowden and Gary Buchanan added 15 each for the Wildcats (14-9, 5-7). Mike Sweetney had 31 points to lead Georgetown (15-9, 6-6), which shot a season-low 30.6 percent from the field.
Villanova trailed 67-65 when Harvey Thomas made one of two free throws with 9.3 seconds left in regulation. Snowden took the inbounds pass, dribbled the length of the court and split three defenders and went in for the layup to tie the game at 67-67.
The Wildcats took a 77-69 lead on Snowden's two free throws with 1:44 left in overtime as Georgetown missed five of its first six shots in the extra period.
Georgetown, which missed 15 straight shots in the first half, trailed 45-31 with 13:57 left in the second half. Sweetney scored 11 points during a 22-7 Hoyas run over the next 9:46 that gave Georgetown a 53-52 lead with 4:11 remaining. Villanova went without a field goal during the stretch, missing all nine shots, and committed six of its 19 turnovers over the span.
Georgetown missed 15 straight shots in the first half and went 10:51 without a field goal. Thomas converted a 3-point play with 11:15 left in the half, but the Hoyas didn't score another field goal until Thomas' layup with 24 seconds left.
