AMBLER, Pa. - Junior catcher Cassie Koenig hit her tenth home run of the season in the opening game, but Villanova (13-36) lost by scores of 4-3 and 2-1 to Temple (22-21) on Tuesday afternoon in Ambler.
In the first game, freshman pitcher Katie Burdeaux kicked off the days scoring, belting the ball over the left field fence for a solo-homer. After walking Junior Makeala Compton and Freshman Danielle Fagan, Compton was picked off at second to end the inning.
The Wildcats took the lead in the top of the third when catcher Cassie Koenig blasted a 2-run homer to left field. Nova got back on the board in the seventh when a single from Meghan Morese sent Sheri Donley home.
The Owls fought back to tie it in the seventh. Repsher doubled to center and advanced to third from a sacrifice bunt, courtesy Amanda Carver. A single from Courtney Norene sent Repsher home. Brittany Burks' double sent her home, tying the game at 3. Freshman Nikki Lee, pinch hitting for Junior Jessica Rohn, struck out swinging to send the game into extra innings.
Villanova was unable to score in their half of the 8th. In Temple's second at-bat in the bottom half, Compton slammed the ball into the scoreboard to give the Owls a dramatic 4-3 victory. Freshman Burdeaux earned the win, her 10th of the season. Nova's Laura Detterman got the loss.
Temple opened the scoring in game two of the twinbill. After walking in the Owl's first at-bat, sophomore Brittany Burks advanced to second off of a single from Repsher. A sacrifice fly from Danielle Fagan would send her home.
The Wildcats got on the board in the third inning. After singling, center fielder Kayla Felty advanced to third off a double from catcher Koenig. An error from shortstop Danielle Fagan would send Felty home.
The Cherry and White responded in their at bat with their second run, securing the win. After being hit by a pitch, junior Brandie Mora took first. Compton singled to left, pushing Mora to second. Mora advanced to third from a single from Fagan. A sacrifice fly courtesy Respher sent Mora home for the game winner. Owl pitcher Ashleigh Porter was credited with the win, her sixth.
