STORRS, Conn.--In a two-day meet on Friday night and Saturday morning, Villanova (0-2) swam at Connecticut (1-0) and was defeated by a score of 237-107. The Wildcats posted a pair of runner-up finishes in the meet, as freshman Scott Thiede (Holmdel, N.J.) and sophomore Ted Sukramani (Williamsburg, Va.) each finished in second place in one of their events.
Thiede touched second in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:45.77 to lead three Villanova entries in the event. He lowered his time in the event by 0.28 seconds from the season opener against La Salle. Thiede was also the Wildcats top finisher in the 100 free, in which he finished third with a time of 48.62.
Sukramani swam in five different individual events over the two days at Connecticut and posted his top finish in the 200 individual medley. He was the runner-up out of five swimmers in the race with a time of 2:02.20, a mark that was nearly a second faster than his time at La Salle last week. Sukramani came in third in the 400 IM in 4:18.62 and was also third in both the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke (1:02.32 and 2:14.54). He lowered his previous BIG EAST qualifying mark in the 200 breast by 0.20 seconds and recorded a qualifying time in the 100 breast in his first race of the season in that event.
In all during the meet, Villanova wound up with four second-place finishes and seven third-place spots. The Wildcats took second in both the 200 and 400 yard freestyle relay races, as the 200 free quartet posted a time of 1:29.41 and was just 0.27 seconds off the winning pace. The 400 free squad posted a time of 3:14.00 in its race.
Freshman Braden Clarke (Chappaqua, N.Y.) placed third in the 100 backstroke in 56.51 to register the other individual third-place finish for Villanova. In the 400 medley relay, the Wildcats `A' team had a time of 3:42.78 which was good for third place.
Villanova is off during the coming week before returning to action in its home opener on November 13 against West Virginia at 6 p.m.
