VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova volleyball team finished the weekend with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-21) sweep over West Virginia on Sunday afternoon to win its sixth consecutive match.
The Wildcats improve to 19-4 overall and own a 7-1 conference mark after earning two wins this weekend.
"Today was a great effort by the whole team," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "West Virginia played really hard today and any time you can earn a sweep in this conference you know you had a good performance. I'm proud that everyone played hard all weekend and didn't let down."
Freshman Alyssa Anderson earned her second straight double-double dishing out a match-high 38 assists with 13 digs.
Redshirt sophomore Morgan Petkovich tallied 12 kills and posted nine digs. Junior Maggie Mergen connected for 11 digs and hit .500 with no errors.
Junior Kim Maroon collected a match-high 20 digs, while freshman Mariah Henley recorded 14. Sophomore Kristina Bither added 10 digs.
The Mountaineers got on the board in the first set and took a 15-10 lead before Villanova used its first timeout. Petkovich hit two kills and Anderson served an ace to close the gap to one point, 17-16 as West Virginia used a timeout. Freshman Allison Williams and sophomore CeCe Twitty connected for back-to-back kills out of the break to give the Wildcats their first lead of the set, 18-17. After consecutive kills by the Mountaineers the score was tied at 21 apiece and Villanova used its final timeout. The Wildcats scored four unanswered after the break with three errors from WVU to win the first set, 25-21.
West Virginia took an early lead once again in the second frame with an 8-4 lead, but `Nova scored four straight points to tie the score with Henley serving. After a timeout from the Mountaineers, Villanova had earned a 14-10 lead and extended it to 18-12 after two kills from Williams and one from Twitty. Sophomore Krista Andersen connected on a kill and a kill from Maroon sealed the second win.
In the third set, the Wildcats got on the board first, but quickly trailed West Virginia 7-4 before scoring four unanswered points to regain an 8-7 lead. The teams traded points back and forth but Anderson, Mergen and Petkovich found the floor for kills and an 18-17 lead to force the Mountaineers into a timeout. Villanova was down 21-20 after the break, but held WVU scoreless with a 5-0 run as K. Andersen hit back-to-back kills for the final two points and a match victory.
The Wildcats will hit the road next weekend playing at Louisville on Friday, Oct. 29 at 7:00 p.m. before heading to Cincinnati Sunday, Oct. 31 at 2:00 p.m.
