CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Villanova volleyball team (19-6, 7-3 BIG EAST) dropped a 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-16) contest to No. 21 Cincinnati at the Fifth Third Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Junior Maggie Mergen led the Wildcats with 10 kills and just one error to hit .450. Freshman Allison Williams connected on six kills with a .312 clip.
Classmate Alyssa Anderson dished out 24 assists and collected seven digs, while junior Kim Maroon recorded nine digs.
Sophomore Krista Andersen connected for a kill in the first set to give Villanova a 3-2 lead and the teams traded points back and forth before the `Cats called a timeout trailing 10-5. The Bearcats went on a 10-0 run to extend their lead to 20-5. Mergen found the floor for a kill with Cincinnati playing for set point, but the Bearcats won the set, 25-12.
Villanova got on the board first in the second frame and traded points with the Bearcats as the score was tied at 10 apiece. A 5-1 run from Cincinnati forced Villanova to call timeout trailing 15-11, but a kill from sophomore CeCe Twitty had closed the gap to four points, 16-12 after the break. Williams found the floor for a kill following the Wildcats' second timeout, but Cincinnati scored five unanswered points to win the set, 25-16.
In the third set, the Bearcats led 13-8 with Villanova using its first timeout. Petkovich and Twitty connected on kills after the break, but Cincinnati held on to a 14-10 lead. The Bearcats used an 8-3 run to extend their lead to 22-13 sending the Wildcats into their last timeout and though Williams connected on a kill and Maroon served an ace, `Nova fell 25-16 as Cincinnati won the match in three sets.
Next weekend the Wildcats will play their final weekend at home hosting Notre Dame on Friday, Nov. 5 at 7:00 p.m. before welcoming DePaul to Jake Nevin Fieldhouse on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 2:00 p.m.
