VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova men's tennis team hosted the Fairfield Stags on Wednesday afternoon at the Villanova Tennis Complex, but the home court advantage wasn't enough to propel the Wildcats to a win over the Stags, falling 4-3 for the day.
Villanova dominated in doubles action, with senior Alex Leeser (Irvington, N.Y.) and junior David Shaheen (Boca Raton, Fla.) defeating the Stag duo of Dan Sauter Joe Michalsin 9-7. Junior Trenton Alenik (Las Vegas, Nev.) and freshman Connor Witty (Wappingers, N.Y.) then gave the Wildcats the doubles point with a victory over Erik and Mark Kremheller, winning 9-8 (7-5) to get the points rolling in favor of VU.
Villanova had a more difficult time at singles, with Alenik and senior John Magliano (Rye Brook, N.Y.) pulling the only victories at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots. Alenik defeated Ryan Berthod, 6-3, 7-6 (4), snapping a four-game win streak for Berthod while Magliano handedly won over Fairfield's Bob Kelly, 6-0, 6-2.
The Wildcats are back in action today as they have a pair of matches against St. John's and Monmouth at their opponent's courts. Match time is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively.
