PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - An early deficit was too much to overcome and Villanova (11-31, 2-12 BIG EAST) lost the second game of a series to Seton Hall (25-16, 9-5 BIG EAST) by a final score of 16-5 at the Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore designated hitter Brandon Carr (Danville, Calif.) went 3-for-3 and senior center fielder Paul Rambaud (Chicago, Ill.) had two hits and drove in three runs for the Wildcats, who trailed 3-0 before coming to bat for the first time.
In the top of the first inning the Pirates put three runs on the board before making the first out of the game. After that however, there was no additional scoring through the end of three innings and Seton Hall maintained their 3-0 lead heading to the top of the fourth.
Two runs scored for the Pirates in both the fourth and fifth innings to stretch the margin to 7-0 and Seton Hall stretched the final margin with four more runs in the seventh and five in the top of the ninth. Along the way to the victory the Pirates amassed 19 hits, the most allowed in a conference game by Villanova since May 7, 2011 against Georgetown.
On the offensive end the Wildcats scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning and then matched Seton Hall with a four-run seventh. The first three runs that Villanova scored in the game all were forced in on walks with the bases loaded, while the final two runs were courtesy of a two-run double by Rambaud with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Freshman first baseman Max Beermann (Tampa, Fla.) was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the sixth inning and Carr singled through the right side for his third consecutive hit. With two outs and runners at the corners Pirates starting pitcher Jose Lopez (2-3, 3.20 ERA) issued walks to freshman second baseman Adam Goss (Bellaire, Texas) and Rambaud, the latter of which scored Beermann with the first Wildcats run of the series.
In the bottom of the seventh inning junior right fielder Connor Jones (Chandler, Ariz.) singled through the right side and freshman catcher Emmanuel Morris (Willowbrook, Ill.) bunted for a base hit. Beermann was again hit by a pitch, loading the bases with nobody out, and Carr walked to force in another run. After the next two batters struck out and flied to right, respectively, freshman pinch hitter Kevin Jewitt (West Chester, Pa.) walked to bring in another run and Rambaud followed with a two-run double to the gap in left-center field.
The first seven runs for the Pirates were charged to junior starting pitcher Pat Young (The Woodlands, Texas), with five of those tallies being earned. Young (1-5, 3.64 ERA) walked two and struck out five in 4 2/3 innings while scattering eight hits.
