Nov. 15, 2014 Recap | Box Score | Notes
Villanova head coach Andy Talley...
Opening statement: [Albany] played real hard and I thought they would. They are a good, scrappy team on the rise. Offensively we had a very good day. John [Robertson] played great. I was disappointed that we gave up a cheap score with a fumble but our defense stepped up in the second half and played better. It was one of those games where we had to take care of business to get to Delaware and go where we need to go.
On the game: I thought the Towson game was the hump game for us. This game was about taking care of business. I knew we were better than them but I knew they were feisty and that they would come and play hard. They throw the ball well and we struggle with the pass. I wanted to make sure we got sufficiently ahead of them and didn't get in a jam.
On making adjustments after Albany started the game with eight straight completions: A lot of times what you try to do is get accustomed to their routes and what they do. When you run them on air in practice with scout team guys it's not quite the same speed and quickness. Their guy is a good quarterback. He has been around and started for three or four years. He knows what he is doing with the ball. Frankly I was surprised they didn't throw the ball more.
On playing Delaware next week: I love the Delaware game. It is the rival game for us. They play great, we play great. We have had many stories victories and they have had many storied victories. It's a game for us that is like a playoff game. We need that 10th victory. I want to be a top seed [in the playoffs] and we have to go down there and play our hearts out to win that game. [Delaware] is going to play great. They always do, especially at Delaware. I am looking forward to it and hoping we can go down and give our best effort and go into the playoffs with a real good feeling.
On the Villanova senior class: They are going to have the opportunity to be in two playoffs out of the four years they are here. They already have a conference championship ring on their fingers. It doesn't look like we can win a conference championship in our league this year unless New Hampshire gets beat, which I doubt will happen. There is one more opportunity for those seniors to go far. It would be unbelievable for them to take this program further and further in the playoffs. Once you get in the playoffs all bets are off. If you are a top seed you have as good a chance as anyone to win the whole thing. We are hoping to get into the playoffs and I think we are now with nine wins. Being home is really critically important. I have been very happy with the senior group. They have been great off the field and on the field, and really good academic kids.
Junior quarterback John Robertson...
On making his first career tackle after Villanova lost a fumble: I just didn't want them to score. It is not good when I'm tackling.
On the improvement to his running game the second week without a cast on his non-throwing hand: I wasn't able to stiff arm and that is a big part of my game. I feel like when I run the ball I like using my off hand. It is very good having no cast on it and now being fully healthy.
On his health: In college football you are never really fully healthy. You have to play with bruises and stuff like that but right now I am not really that banged up.
On his place in the Villanova record book: That is just a credit to all my hard work and my team's hard work. I can't do anything without them.
On the season Villanova is having: Before tonight we had two games left, now we have one. We just have to do our jobs and go out and win to put ourselves in the best position possible going into the playoffs.
On his Villanova experience: I am just taking away being a good guy on and off the field. That is what we preach. We always try to help each other out and be the best person.
On playing Delaware next week: They are going to bring their best game so we should come and bring ours. It is a really good game because we play for everyone who has played at Villanova before us. When we were out there I remember last year thinking `Man we are down a lot we have to keep playing because there are guys watching on TV or looking at the score in the stands who have played and they would be thinking that it is a big game for everybody.'
Junior wide receiver Kevin Gulyas...
On his two touchdowns: It was important, as coach said, to get out fast offensively. We have had some big plays throughout the season. Watching film it looked like Albany had been sticking around with the good CAA teams so it was important to get ahead of them quick by doing some big plays and hitting some home runs. That was the big thing that jumpstarted us today.
On his big plays tonight: It helps our offense move and allows us to go up-tempo when we have 20 yard gains, or 30 and 40 yard gains. The defense is often subbing and we can catch them going slow or maybe with 12 men on the field. That is a big part of our offense when we go up-tempo.
On his Villanova experience: There are a lot of life lessons we learn in football that translate off the field. Our coaching staff and the guys in this program really put character ahead of performance on the field. That is a big thing here.
On playing Delaware next week: I look at it as it is the first round of the playoffs. It will be like a playoff game. That is the atmosphere it is going to be. We just need to come out and be ready to go. The atmosphere there is always great. They are going to play hard and give us their "A" game. We need to bring ours. It will be a great game, and like a first round playoff game.
