The Villanova Field Hockey Team (3-9) hosted the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds (0-8) on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats dominated play resulting in a 7-0 win.
Villanova started off hot as they forced play in the Blackbird territory. With four minutes into the game, the Wildcats received a penalty corner. Allison Sayia put the ball back in play for the Wildcats, as Emma McLaughlin stroked the ball into the net, scoring her second goal of the season.
The Wildcats continued to maintain pressure on the Blackbirds when Francesca Bello dribbled in off of a pass from Kristen Mericle to give them the 2-0 edge.
Junior Molly Turner had a fantastic day to help her team out with two back to back goals. In the 22nd minute of play, she received a pass from Abby Siana, from there Turner dribbled in to notch the ball into the net. Eleven minutes later, Turner stayed hot when the Wildcats received another penalty corner. She took the pass from Courtney Devine and yet again dribbled in to score. These two goals, were Turner's first two goals of the season.
At the half, Villanova led 4-0 with nine penalty corners, 23 shots total, ten of which were on goal. LIU Brooklyn came up with just two shots, both were not on goal, as Taylor Kidwell, Carolynn Clark, and Christen Pennington were a force to be reckoned with on defense.
The Wildcats' intensity level continued in the second half. With four minutes into the second half, the freshman duo of Emma McLaughlin and Megan Vermeil worked together to contribute another Wildcat goal. Vermeil received the pass from McLaughlin when she dribbled in to score her second goal of the season.
Senior Courtney Devine was strong for the Wildcats with her speed. She intercepted the ball from LIU Brooklyn on the Wildcats' defensive side, dribbled past midfield, and blew by all Blackbirds to register a shot on goal, which was good, scoring her third goal of the season.
With time winding down on the clock, the Wildcats received another penalty corner in the 64th minute of play. Freshman Suzie Clark fired in a shot off a pass from Kristen Mericle. This marks Suzie Clark's first collegiate goal.
The Wildcats had a strong mix of goals and assists by really coming together and playing as a team. Villanova ended the game with 45 shots, 21 of those were on goal, and 23 penalty corners.
The Villanova Field Hockey Team will return to play when they travel to Storrs, Conn. to face off against the current number one ranked, UConn on Friday October 7th at 6:00 p.m.
