The Villanova Field Hockey Team (4-12, 1-5 BIG EAST) traveled to Norfolk, Va. to take on the Old Dominion Monarchs (7-8, 3-3 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon. After a tough battle that went into overtime, Villanova fell short to the Monarchs, 3-2.
Old Dominion took the lead in the first two minutes of the game. The Monarchs drew a penalty corner and then scored the first goal off of a deflection.
At the half, key defensive player, Taylor Kidwell exited the game to get stitches after making a great defensive save. With four minutes into the second half, the Wildcats came out firing when Abby Siana picked up her 5th goal of the season. The goal was assisted by fifth year senior, Carolynn Clark.
Four minutes later, Old Dominion notched their second goal of the game, to give them the 2-1 advantage. That didn't stop the Villanova defense, as Christen Pennington was stellar with two back to back interceptions. Pennington also picked up her first defensive save of the season. Erika Miller was very strong in goal as well.
The Wildcats continued to draw multiple corners, four in the second half to help their chances of scoring. With just one minute left in play, Megan Vermeil drew a penalty for Villanova. From there, Kristen Mericle passed the ball to Emma McLaughlin who sent the ball to the opposite post to tie the game with 46 seconds left in play.
With the score tied at 2, the Wildcats went into overtime. Both teams fought hard with seven versus seven, which are overtime rules. Erika Miller stayed at goal for the Wildcats, while Courtney Devine, Francesca Bello, Carolynn Clark, Emma McLaughlin, Abby Siana, and Christen Pennington were the remaining six in the game for the Wildcats. With about one minute left in overtime play, Old Dominion scored a goal to end the game.
Villanova was led by strong defense by Kidwell before she left the game, Carolynn Clark and Christen Pennington. Goalkeeper Erika Miller allowed three goals, but was phenomenal in goal as she finished the game with 11 saves.
The Wildcats finished the game with ten shots, seven of which were on goal, and nine penalty corners.
The Villanova Field Hockey Team will return to action on Tuesday, October 25th for their Annual Play for the Cure game. They will host the Penn Quakers for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
