Villanova, Pa. - Villanova fell to #7/8 Florida 18-8 at home on Sunday afternoon. Ashley Lynch (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) led the Wildcats with three points on one goal and two assists. Katie Comerford (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), Jillian Swikart (Rumson, N.J.) and Liz Trojan (Airmont, N.Y.) all had two goals each. Villanova is now 6-6 overall and 1-4 in the BIG EAST. Florida advances to 10-3 overall and 5-0 in the BIG EAST.
Villanova took its' first and only lead of the game 50 seconds in when Christine Graziano (Mendham, N.J.) scooped a ground ball in front of Florida's net and put it in to strike first in the game 1-0. The Gators responded quickly, scoring just 16 seconds after to tie the game at 1-1. They scored five unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead seven minutes into the game. Comerford then buried a free position shot for Villanova to hault the Gators' run momentarily. Each team went eight minutes without a goal until the Florida went on another 5-0 run to take a commanding 10-2 lead with 11:45 left to play in the half. The Wildcats wouldn't quit however, as Ashley Lynch took advantage of a free position chance, followed by a man-up goal by Comerford to bring the score to 10-4. This momentum shift only lasted two minutes, before Florida went on a 4-0 run to end the half leading 14-4.
The Gators outshot the Wildcats 26-12 in the first half. They also had 12 draw controls to Villanova's seven. Villanova used three different goalkeepers in the first half in Julia Michaels (Mount Sinai, N.Y.), Olivia Gonsalves (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and Khaia Baranowski (Marlton, N.J.).
Four minutes into the second half, Devon Brown (Basking Ridge, N.J.) found Jillian Swikart on a goal, taking advantage of another man-up opportunity, to bring the Wildcats within nine at 14-5. Florida answered with a goal of their own, but Villanova continued to attack as Liz Trojan found the back of the net for her first goal of the game. The Gators then scored two consecutive goals to take a 17-6 lead, their biggest of the day. Trojan and Swikart each scored once more but Florida closed out the game 18-8.
The Gators took 36 shots to Villanova's 22. They won 17 draw controls to Villanova's 11 and had 14 ground balls to the Wildcats' 11.
