Omaha, NE- The Villanova softball team (27-23-2 overall, 10-7 BIG EAST) fell to Creighton in the final regular season game of the year by a score of 9-0 on Sunday. The Wildcats will be advancing to the BIG EAST Conference Championships where they will first face DePaul on Friday, May 11. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
After the Wildcats went down one, two, three to begin the game, Creighton would lead off the game with a single to place a runner with no outs. After two quick outs were made by the Wildcats, the Blue Jays would knock a double to right center scoring one to make the score 1-0 Creighton after one inning.
The Wildcats would be able to place their first baserunner of the game courtesy of a walk by senior Dana Morris with one out in the inning. But the Wildcats would be unable to score in the inning as Creighton would be able to retire the next two Villanova batters keeping the score 1-0 Creighton heading into the bottom of the second.
Creighton would be able to add another run in the second as they Blue Jays launched a solo home run to take a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the third inning.
Villanova would be able to place a runner on first with one out courtesy of a walk by Megan Ruiz. But a lineout turned into a double play to conclude the top of the third with the score remaining 2-0 Creighton.
Creighton would add two more runs in the bottom of the third inning courtesy of a pair of RBI doubles to make the score 4-0 Blue Jays heading into the top of the fourth inning.
Freshman Angela Giampolo would get the first hit of the game for Villanova as she laced as single through the left side to place a runner on first with one out. A fielder's choice and a fly out to right field would conclude the top half of the fourth the score remaining 4-0 in favor of the Blue Jays.
Creighton would lead off the bottom of the fourth with a single to place a runner on first with no outs. But freshman pitcher Taylor Rhinehart would be able to retire the next three Creighton batters keeping the score 4-0 Creighton as the game moved into the top of the fifth inning.
After the Wildcats went down in order one, two, three to begin the inning, Creighton would add one more run to the scoreboard after the Blue Jays knocked in an RBI single to make the score 5-0 Creighton heading into the top of the sixth.
Two quick outs by the Wildcats would bring up junior Lauren Hanna to the plate as she would hit a hard single to third base to place a runner on first. But that would be all the Wildcats could accomplish in the inning keeping the score 5-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
A three-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth by Creighton would end the game with the final score being 9-0 in favor of the Blue Jays.
