Casey Comber Advances to NCAA Championships in 1500 Meters

Villanova had full day of field events and track races on third day of NCAA East Preliminary meet

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—It was a full day of action for Villanova at the NCAA East Preliminary and senior distance runner Casey Comber (Maple Glen, Pa.) advanced to the NCAA Championships in the 1500 meters as an automatic qualifier out of the quarterfinal heats at Hodges Stadium on Friday evening. Comber is a two-time qualifier for the national meet in the 1500 meters and the Wildcats second athlete to punch a ticket to the final rounds of the NCAA Championships which take place in Eugene, Ore. later this month. Friday's schedule at the East preliminary meet – the final day of men's events – featured the high jump and triple jump in the afternoon followed by the 1500 meters, 3000 meter steeplechase and 5000 meters later in the evening.

Comber ran in the first of two quarterfinal heats in the 1500 meters and had to make a big kick over the final 200 meters to secure one of the five automatic qualifying spots coming out of each heat. He wound up fifth with a time of 3:39.57 after a dramatic lean across the line which saw Comber and Tom Dodd of Michigan tumble to the ground just over the finish line. The bruise on Comber's right shoulder immediately after the fall was a worthy battle scar as his time was officially three-hundredths of a second faster than Dodd, who wound up being one of two on-time qualifiers for the semifinal round in Eugene.

Immediately following the conclusion of the second quarterfinal heat the public address announcer informed the crowd that the two heats combined to make up the fastest quarterfinal en masse in the 1500 meters in NCAA history. That was in reference to the cutoff time of 3:39.88 that it took to make it through to the national meet, making it the first time ever that all of the qualifiers had broken 3:40 during the quarterfinal round. Redshirt freshman Sean Dolan (Pennington, N.J.) ran a strong race in the same heat at Comber and posted a time of 3:40.43 to come in 13th overall and just one spot away from advancing to nationals in his first collegiate outdoor season. Sophomore Charlie O'Donovan (Cork, Ireland) rain in the second quarterfinal heat and came in seventh in his heat in 3:42.28.

The final individual event of the night was the national semifinal heats of the 5000 meters. Junior Josh Phillips (Belrose, Australia) competed in the first of two heats and came in 11th in his heat with a time of 13:57.75. It was a strong race for Phillips, who was near the back of the pack following the first 1000 meters but steadily moved through the ranks and was in position near the leaders in a tight pack for the better part of the race. He was in fifth place with 800 meters to go when the runners finally began to string out approaching the bell lap.

Sophomore Haftu Strintzos (Victoria, Australia) ran in the second semifinal heat and raced with nothing to lose after qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 10000 meters less than 48 hours earlier. Strintzos was at the very back of the field of 24 runners after 1000 meters in Friday night's 5K semifinal but made a drastic move during the next lap to get up within striking distance of the lead with nine laps remaining. He wound up posting a time of 14:05.66 to come in 16th in his heat and 30th overall, while Phillips was 21st overall following his first career race at the NCAA East Preliminary meet.

The other track event for the Wildcats on Friday evening was the quarterfinal round of the 3000 meter steeplechase. Senior Nick Steele (Princeton, Mass.) competed in this race for the second time in his career after previously being a qualifier during the 2019 season. He ran in the first of three heats and posted a time of 9:47.58.

Earlier in the day, senior high jumper Jacob Kelly (Longmeadow, Mass.) recorded three successful jumps and tied his personal best with a successful clearance at 2.11 meters. Kelly made it over the bar at heights of 2.01 meters, 2.06 meter and 2.11 meters during the competition. His first attempt at 2.11 meters was a good one and matched his effort from the 2019 outdoor BIG EAST Championships which earned Kelly his first appearance at the NCAA East Preliminary meet. He returned this season and made the most of the opportunity, finishing in a tie for 26th place out of 48 competitors. Kelly's previous season best had been a height of 2.09 meters at the Virginia Challenge last month.

The bar started at a height of 2.01 meters in the high jump and Kelly made it over on his second jump of the day. He built momentum after that though, clearing 2.06 meters and 2.11 meters on his first tries despite rattling the bar each time. There were 31 competitors remaining in the competition when the bar was raised to a height of 2.16 meters. Kelly had attempted a jump at that height just once previously in his career and missed on his three attempts, with his final jump the best of those three efforts. Just over a third of the remaining field of competitors was eliminated with the bar at 2.16 meters.

Junior triple jumper Malik Cunningham (St. Andrew, Jamaica) competed in the second flight of the triple jump and recorded a mark of 15.14 meters on his second of three attempts. It is the seventh time in his collegiate career that Cunningham has surpassed 15 meters during competition. He opened on Friday with a mark of 14.88 meters on his first attempt of the day, then increased the mark on his second jump. His third and final attempt was measured at 14.78 meters. With two flights complete in the triple jump, Cunningham stood in fifth place in the second flight and ninth place overall in the competition. He wound up 33rd among the four flights to wrap up his first career NCAA East Preliminary appearance.
