Wildcats Edged Out By Stags on Sunday Afternoon

Fairfield, CT - The Villanova field hockey team dropped a non-conference road game against Fairfield 2-0. The Wildcats fall to 4-6 on the season, while the Stags improve to 4-5.

The first half of this contest saw both teams play stifling defense, as each team had less than six shots at the intermission. For Villanova, both of their first half shots on goal were saved early in the first period. Caitlin Van Goeverden fired a shot at the 5:22 mark that was saved by the keeper. Meghan Mitchell got off another shot seconds later that was also saved by the Stags goalkeeper. 

In the third period, Fairfield was able to break the scoring drought, working the ball around off a penalty corner and converting, to take a 1-0 lead. The corner was one of eight in the period for the home team, finishing with 12 total. Villanova had two penalty corners, one in each of the first two periods. 

Four minutes into the final frame, the Stags scored off another penalty corner, making the score 2-0. The Fairfield defense was on display throughout the game, holding Villanova to less shots in the final three quarters combined (3), than in the first quarter (4). 

Jordan McGinley recorded five saves in goal for the Wildcats.
