BRYN MAWR, Pa.—In its final match before heading to California for Spring Break the men's tennis team got strong play throughout the lineup and Villanova (2-4) tallied a 6-1 victory over Coppin State (0-5) at the Bryn Mawr Racquet Club on Friday evening. Leading the way for the Wildcats were senior
Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore
Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) who each tallied singles victories in addition to teaming up for a win at No. 1 doubles.
Villanova won both doubles matches which were played to claim the first point of the night, then posted victories in four of the five singles matches to be contested. The first doubles win came from sophomore
Anthony Prokurat (Manalapan, N.J.) and freshman
Trey Fourticq (Los Angeles, Calif.) who recorded a 6-4 victory over Vansh Kapoor and Sergiu Medesan in the No. 2 doubles match. That clinched the team point as a result of a walkover in the No. 3 doubles spot.
Jones and Robinson played at No. 1 doubles and posted a 7-5 victory over Luka Markovic and Anas Haddou. The pairs then matched up against each other in singles play, with Robinson defeating Markovic at No. 1 singles by set scores of 6-4 and 6-1. Jones tallied a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Haddou in their No. 4 singles competition.
The other victories for the Wildcats came from junior
Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) and sophomore
Ryan Nguyen (Oakton, Va.) in the No. 3 and No. 5 lineup spots. Suarez defeated Dean Waterman in a 6-2, 6-1 decision and Nguyen won a first-set tiebreaker to power past Kapoor for a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory.
Villanova will now head to the West Coast and begin its California trip with a match against UC Riverside on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Eastern time (2 p.m. Pacific).
