BLACKSBURG, Va.—Competition began on Friday evening in the Doc Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet with three Villanova throwers competing during the weekend competition. First up for the Wildcats was the weight throw on Friday night in which senior
Emily Galvin (Pitman, N.J.) led the team with a fifth place finish. Still to come is the women's shot put which will be contested at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
Galvin threw for a personal best mark of 16.38 meters at Rector Field House on Friday to move up one more spot on the all-time Villanova performance list in the weight throw. She extended the previous PR of 16.15 meters which she had set just two weeks ago at a Wildcats home meet in New York. Galvin threw in the second of two flights at Virginia Tech and opened the night with a throw of 16.16 meters on her first attempt.
She had already secured a new top mark with that throw, but her third attempt went for 16.38 meters to join teammates
Jul Thomson (Otterville, Ont.) and
Sade Meeks (North Babylon, N.Y.) among the top five performers in the weight throw in school history. Meeks has twice broken the school record this season and owns the current standard of 20.88 meters, while Thomson ranks third in the Villanova record book with a season and lifetime best of 16.55 meters set two weeks ago.
Thomson placed 10
th in Friday's competition with a distance of 15.71 meters recorded on her final attempt. After the athletes in each flight had finished three initial throws, the top nine took three more attempts in the final. Galvin's top throw over the last three attempts was 16.22 meters.
Meeks and Thomson are both scheduled to compete in the shot put on Saturday.
