Villanova, Pa.- Villanova men's lacrosse will host the No. 6 Penn Quakers on Saturday afternoon for the 32
nd meeting all-time between the two programs. The Wildcats are 3-2 coming into Saturday while the Quakers are 2-1. First faceoff is scheduled for 1:00 P.M.
The Farrell Cup: The annual University of Pennsylvania and Villanova University lacrosse game will be known as "The Farrell Cup", in loving memory of James and Michael Farrell. This past summer James and Michael tragically passed award. James was a 2018 graduate of Penn and played four seasons on the men's lacrosse team. Michael was a Villanovan, a member of the class of 2023, and enrolled in the Business school, a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and participated in Villanova Club Lacrosse.
The inscription on the Farrell Cup, which will be awarded to the winning coach and team at the conclusion of the game, epitomizes what the boys stood for: "An Annual tradition Honoring the unconditional love of Family, Friendship and the spirit of competition and commitment to team".
A Look at Villanova: The Wildcats are coming off a comeback win over Hofstra last weekend. Villanova was down 5-1 at halftime and netted seven goals in the second half and limited the Pride to one goal to make the final 8-6. Villanova also defeated Penn State and Fairfield this season and fallen to Yale and Brown.
Villanova's Offense: Matt Campbell was named BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week after having nine points (six goals, three assists) to lead Villanova last week. Against Brown, Campbell notched five points, registering two goals and three assists in the one-goal defeat. Brett Baskin had a game high nine points on six goals and three assists, he currently ranked third on the team in points 18.
Villanova's Defense: Faceoff specialist
Justin Coppola has been dominating this season, he currently ranks 18
th in the country in faceoff off winning percentage (.595). Coppola was 13-for-17 last weekend against Hofstra. SSDM
Chet Comizio leads the team in caused turnovers with nine. The senior captain also has 10 ground balls this season.
Reid Colwell and
Brody LaPorte have made an impact on the Wildcats close defense this season, both have double digit ground balls and four caused turnovers.
A Look at Penn: The Quakers are coming off a 10-9 win against Penn State last weekend. To open the season, they fell to #3 Georgetown but bounced back by defeat #7 Duke on the road in overtime. Dylan Gergar is the leading scorer for Penn with 14 goals while Sam Handley had dished the ball four times, a team high. Jamie Zusi and Chris Areri have spilt time at the faceoff x and as a pair are 29-for-72 (.403). In goal the last two games has been Patrick Burkinshaw. The senior has a 10.68 goals against average and .532 save percentage
