BRYN MAWR, Pa.—In a close match played inside the Bryn Mawr Racquet Club on Sunday evening Villanova (2-5) tallied victories in each of the top four singles matches to earn a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Seton Hall (5-9). Senior
Annalise Klopfer (Palm Harbor, Fla.), freshman
Emma Brogan (Kennesaw, Ga.), junior
Caitlin Fisher (Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshman
Valieriia Kornieva (Dnipro, Ukraine) were each winners as the Wildcats claimed their second dual victory of the Spring.
Kornieva played a thriller at No. 4 singles and rallied past Arabella Moen after losing the opening set. She eventually tallied a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win and Villanova got straight-set decisions from Brogan and Fisher in the second and third lineup spots. Brogan was a 7-5, 6-3 winner over Chloe Hamlin and Fisher powered past Aina Plana Ventosa for a 6-2, 6-3 victory. The fourth point of the match for the Wildcats came from Klopfer in the No. 1 singles match. She won her opening set, 6-1, against Arina Gumerova before Gumerova retired.
Sunday's match was moved indoors earlier in the week due to the cold and inclement weather forecasted for the area this weekend. The visiting Pirates jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles match. Klopfer and Brogan faced Gumerova and Moen in the No. 1 doubles spot, while senior
Sabina Grigorian (Atlanta, Ga.) and Kornieva took on Hamlin and Plana Ventosa in the second match. Both of those decisions went 6-4 in favor of Seton Hall, while the No. 3 doubles match was not played to completion.
Villanova will next play on the road when it travels to St. John's this coming Friday for a 1:45 p.m. match.
