LA JOLLA, Calif.—The doubles team of senior Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) made a thrilling run to the quarterfinal round of the Consolation Draw at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship with a pair of matches played at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club on Saturday morning. They were in action along with the junior team of Alex Kim (Cary, N.C.) and Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) as Villanova wrapped up play in its swing through California this week.
 
Jones and Robinson made their mark for the Wildcats by winning 12 doubles matches together last season. They have stayed intact as a tandem this year and started Saturday by eliminating the Boston College team of Bennett Turner and Oliver Worth from the Consolation Draw bracket. In the Round of 16 in the draw, Jones and Robinson posted a 5-3, 3-5, 7-2 victory to advance to a consolation quarterfinal match later in the day.
 
One of the best doubles matches Villanova has played this season awaited in the quarterfinal round, where Jones and Robinson got out to a fast start against Lucas Magnaudet and Sean Hill from PAC-12 Conference member California. Jones and Robinson won the opening set, 7-5, and went to a tiebreaker in the second set before Magnaudet and Hill moved on to the consolation semifinal round with a tenuous 5-7,7-6 (4), 6-4 victory.
 
Kim and Suarez played their first consolation match on Saturday after drawing byes in each of the first two consolation rounds. They squared off against Caleb Settles and John Cross in the Consolation Draw Round of 16 and were defeated in a 0-4, 5-3, 7-3 decision.
