LA JOLLA, Calif.—For the second straight dual match Villanova (2-9) went toe-to-toe in a close match against a West Coast opponent but came out on the short end of a 6-1 decision against Division III Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (7-2) at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon. The team point for the Wildcats came from sophomore Anthony Prokurat (Manalapan, N.J.) in the No. 4 singles match. Several of the matches played on Saturday featured close competition between the two teams.

Prokurat came from behind to win his match against Ian Freer in a tiebreaker after dropping the opening set. Freer got out to a fast start and took the first stanza, 6-1, but Prokurat tied the match with a 6-4 victory in the second set and outlasted Freer in a 10-8 tiebreaker. The match between sophomore Ryan Nguyen (Oakton, Va.) and Matthew Robinson at No. 5 singles also featured a tiebreaker after Robinson was a 6-1 winner in the opening set. Nguyen won the second set, 6-4, but fell in a 10-7 tiebreaker in the final match to wrap up on the day.

Villanova also got strong play from junior Alex Kim (Cary, N.C.) in the No. 3 lineup spot. Kim went down to the wire against Ethan Carroll before falling 6-2, 7-6 (3). The matches at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 singles ended in straight sets.

In the doubles matches to open the day the closest result was in the top lineup spot where Kim and junior Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) were defeated in a 6-4 decision by Jack Katzman and Robert Liu. Suarez later lost to Liu, 6-1 and 6-1, in their No. 1 singles matchup.
