Annalise Klopfer (Palm Harbor, Fla.) and junior
Caitlin Fisher (Cincinnati, Ohio) were each singles winners for Villanova (4-9) in the final match of the regular season but the Wildcats lost a close match to Georgetown (8-12) by a 4-2 final score at Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School on Saturday morning. Fisher won both of her matches on the day as she picked up a win at No. 3 singles and teamed with senior
Olivia Kapp (Milton, Ga.) for a victory in the No. 3 doubles match.
The host Hoyas opened the match by claiming wins in each of the first two doubles matches to secure the first team point. Klopfer and freshman
Emma Brogan (Kennesaw, Ga.) fell in a 6-2 decision at No. 1 doubles, while senior
Sabina Grigorian (Atlanta, Ga.) and freshman
Valieriia Kornieva (Dnipro, Ukraine) were defeated in a 6-0 result at No. 2 doubles. The first win of the match for the Wildcats came at No. 3 doubles where Kapp and Fisher coasted to a 6-1 win over Brooke Murphy and Nadine Del Carmen.
Steady and competitive play from both teams dominated the singles matches, with all but one match advancing to at third set. Klopfer won her eighth straight singles match in come-from-behind fashion in the No. 1 spot in the lineup. She rallied past Avantika Willy for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win to improve her record on the year to 12-2 overall and 11-1 in dual competition. Since joining the Wildcats as a transfer from Navy before the start of the 2021 campaign, Klopfer has reeled off 18 singles wins in 24 decisions.
Fisher was a singles winner in the No. 3 spot with a thrilling finish in the third set. She outlasted Agata Mikos in a tiebreaker to earn a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5) victory. Fisher closed out the regular season with consecutive victories over Connecticut and Georgetown in her last two singles matches. She improved her record in dual competition this season to 6-7 overall, including a 4-4 mark when she plays in the top half of the Villanova lineup.
Sophomore
Bella Steffen (Cary, N.C.) won her opening set at No. 5 singles against Morgan Coburn before eventually falling in a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 decision. In the No. 2 singles match, Brogan tied the match in the second set and pushed Georgetown upperclassman Chloe Bendetti to the limit in a narrow 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (6) setback. The other match which was completed came at No. 4 singles where Kornieva was defeated by set scores of 6-1 and 6-4 in a matchup against Carmen Aizpurua.
The match at No. 6 singles did not finish and was also a close one. Junior
Amanda Rivera-Gonzalez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) won her first set against Olivia Ashton but trailed the match 2-6, 6-4, 5-3 when play was halted once the Hoyas clinched the team win.
