Villanova Falls to No. 15 Huskies in Bottom Ninth Walk Off

Storrs, Conn. - The Villanova Wildcats fell to the nationally ranked UConn Huskies by a final score of 2-1 in the series finale Sunday afternoon. The No. 15 Huskies walked it off in the bottom of the ninth after the teams weere scoreless until the home half of the sixth inning.

Each side left at least one runner on through the first inning and a half, but it was Villanova that posted the first 1-2-3 frame of the afternoon with a third swinging strikeout from Chic DeGaetano and a pair of groundouts to third to close the second.

Villanova had men on the corners in both the third and the fourth, but nothing came of either chance, keeping the game scoreless heading into the fourth.

UConn's best chance to end the scoreless stalemate came in the bottom of the fifth with runners on the corners, its first runner on third in the game. Simmons put down a fielder's choice that saw Jack O'Reilly make a play to John Whooley at the plate to get that lead runner for the second out. DeGaetano and the 'Cats got out of the jam on a fly out to move to the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Patrick Montfort relieved DeGaetano, who finished with five innings pitched, three hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Montfort ran into trouble with two outs in the bottom of the inning, as the Huskies managed two runners on base. After allowing the game's first run, he was replaced by Cole Vanderslice.

A leadoff homerun from AJ Hansen gave Villanova their only run of the contest, tying the game 1-1 in the top of the seventh. This was the juniors third homer of the season and 15th run batted in.

Vanderslice would pitch a scoreless inning with three walks, with Devin Rivera entering the game with two outs in the seventh and runners on base. Rivera would get out the jam and bring up Villanova's 2-3-4 hitters in the top of the eighth inning.

Both teams left a runner on base in the eighth frame, after a single from Joey Castellanos and a double from the Huskies with two down.

After a scoreless top of the ninth, UConn's leadoff hitter was hit by a pitch by Jonathan Cole, who found himself in a jam. The Huskies managed a successful sacrifice bunt to move the runner to second, while Villanova would intentionally walk the next batter to put runner's on the corners and one out. A sacrafice fly to center field would score the game winning run and give UConn their second win of the BIG EAST matchup.

The loss moves Villanova to 15-20-1 on the season, and 5-7 in conference play, while UConn improves to 32-8 and 8-1 in the BIG EAST. The 'Cats will travel to Wagner College for a one game matchup on Tuesday April 26. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
