VILLANOVA, Pa. – A four-game non-conference stretch opens for Villanova on Wednesday as the Hawks of Saint Joseph's visit the Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
Villanova (17-21-1) has played six consecutive BIG EAST contests, making this the first out-of-league tilt since defeating Delaware for the Liberty Bell Classic title back on April 19. That victory extended the group's unbeaten streak in non-conference games to eight consecutive games. Since the face-off with Delaware, the Wildcats have gone 3-3, taking the first two games from St. John's in this past weekend's series before falling in the Sunday finale, 11-8.
This will be the second meeting this season with Saint Joseph's (24-17), with the 'Cats walking away with an 11-7 loss, snapping a four-game winning streak in the series.
Cameron Hassert led the team with a four-RBI day, going 3-for-5 from the dish and hammering a home run.
Chris Rotondo reached in every at bat in the game, going 4-for-4 and reaching on a walk.
In 141 games, Villanova still leads the series, 93-44-4 and has a stout home record of 49-17, winning two of the last five meetings in Plymouth Meeting. The last game played on the home turf between the two was an 8-7 victory in 11 innings.
Racking Up the Hits: Four Wildcats this season have accounted for at least 10 multi-hit games.
Jack O'Reilly became the latest addition to that list on Sunday when he went 3-for-5 against St. John's, scoring twice and driving in a run. He and
Pat O'Neill have had 10 such games with Rotondo at 13 and
Joey Castellanos at a team-high 15.
Relievers: Since April 19,
Jonathan Cole has pitched 4 2/3 relief innings with no earned runs against him. In that span, he has scattered three hits and walked five while striking out two. Before allowing a run on Sunday,
Cole Vanderslice had gone 4 1/3 innings in four appearances without a run scored, as well, giving off two hits and striking out four.
Combined Shutouts: Devin Rivera and
Tyler Arella combined for the shutout against St. John's in Saturday's win. Rivera pitched an inning to now sit tied for third in Villanova history for single-season combined shutouts with two. As for Arella, this is his tied for third for career combined shutouts with three.
Scouting the Hawks: Saint Joseph's comes into Wednesday on the heels of a 7-3 loss to Fordham in A-10 play that snapped a four-game winning streak. Outside of the conference, the Hawks are 15-11 on the year, going 3-2 in their last five such games. Saint Joseph's is batting .308 on the year as a team, the 19
th best average in the nation, with the 30
th most hits at 454. The group has launched 54 home runs. Andrew Cossetti leads the team with 15 of those, placing him at 25
th nationally, while also driving in a team-high 55 runs. He has reached base in every game this season for the Hawks, as well, the longest streak on the team. The Hawks' pitching staff has put together a 6.19 ERA on the year, allowing 304 runs on 432 hits with 34 home runs against while striking out 309 batters. In 15 appearances, Matt McShane has gone 5-0 with a 1.91 ERA and a 1.18 ERA, sitting down 39 batters. The only pitcher to strike out more batters has been Mike Falco at 41.
