VILLANOVA, Pa.- The third and final day of the annual Villanova Invitation started early in the morning until rain delayed play and eventually was called off due to the weather.
Â
Villanova had three teams competing in the Blue Draw where they all battled it out on the court with only one team advancing to the third round.
Â
The team of freshman
Tighe Brunetti and
Cooper Gordon were the lone members of the Wildcat pack to advance in the Blue Draw in a 2-1 win over Colgate's Max Litton and Tejas Gupta. Due to the weather, they played quick tie breakers to get some tennis in before the rain picked up. They won in doubles against the Raiders (7-5) while Brunetti fell to Litton in singles (8-6) and Gordon won over Gupta in singles (8-6). This would have pushed their team into the final round to play for third place.
Â
The team of junior captain
Josh Robinson and sophomore
Trey Fourticq faced off against Lehigh's Matt Kleiman and Jeremy Learner where Robinson and Fourticq were defeated in doubles (6-4). Robinson fell to Kleiman in an intense singles battle in the rain (6-4, 3-6, 10-7). Unfortunately, the weather did not permit Fourticq to play against Learner in their singles match. Junior
Ryan Nguyen and senior
Justin Suarez were meant to face off against Saint Joseph's Alejandro Vedri/Justas Agbo but the match was canceled due to the rain.
Â
In the White Draw both Villanova teams were defeated before the rain. The team of senior captain
Will Gatti and junior
Noah Winton faced off against Lehigh's Michael Bukhalo/Wyeth Anzilotti and started off strong taking the doubles win (6-3). Winton took on Bukhalo and fell in singles (6-4, 6-3), Gatti also fell to Anzilotti in singles (6-3, 6-1) after a tough battle.
Â
Villanova's team of senior
Alex Kim and
Lukas Choi faced off against Ben Graham/Aidan Chung and put up a very strong battle until the end. The Wildcats fell to the Raiders in doubles (6-4) and Kim put up a fight in singles going into a tie breaker against Graham (6-3, 5-7, 12-10) eventually falling. Choi battled against Chung and ultimately got injuried in the third set falling to Chung (7, 6-4 (INJ W)).
The Wildcats return to action on Friday September 23 for the Saint Joseph's Invitational.
