Maddie Fried netted the game winning goal with just 35 seconds left to play during Wednesday's game at Colgate to give the Wildcats their first win of the season.
In the 89
th minute as Colgate was clearing the ball just in front of midfield
Izzy Newton was able to pick the ball from her defender. There Newton made the short pass to Fried who was in the middle of the field. Fried was able to take a few steps before launching a shot from 25 yards out that went over the head of the Colgate keeper and in.
In the opening minute it was Fried who gave the Wildcats a strong scoring chance when she launched a shot from the top of the box that was just in reach of the keeper and was able to be punched away.
Villanova's two other shots came off a corner in the 88
th minute. Fried got the first shot off that was blocked and bounced to
Emma Weaver. Weaver also got a shot off that was blocked.
Colgate had three shots on the night with Emily Amano having two and placing one on goal that was saved by
Payton Woodward.
This was the first win at Villanova for head coach
Samar Azem and her staff.
Next the Wildcats will open BIG EAST play on Sunday, September 25
th at Seton Hall. Kick off in South Orange, New Jersey is scheduled for 1:00 P.M.
