Ithaca, N.Y.- The Villanova Wildcats fell to the Cornell Big Red on Sunday afternoon by a final of 2-1. The Wildcats move to 0-3-2 on the season while the Big Red are now 1-3-0.
Cornell got the board in the 12
th minute when Laken Gallman was able to pick the ball from the Villanova defender trying to clear it out of the box and score to make it 1-0. The Big Red second goal came in the 18
th minute after a corner was played in Ashley Durik got a header off that was blocked and found Gaby Gonzalez who was able to take the rebound and score to make it 2-0.
The Wildcats answered back in the next minute with a goal of their own.
Emma Weaver played a far side corner into the box. After bouncing around the ball found the feet of
Alexa Wojnovich who was by the near side goal post and connected on the shot to score making it 2-1.
Payton Woodward got her second straight in goal and finished the first half with four straight saves to keep the Wildcats within one heading to halftime.
In the second half Villanova got seven shots off.
Kelsey DeLola placed one shot in the bottom left of the goal that was saved while
Makayla Stadler sent one straight into the center of the goal that was as saved. Freshman
Reese Kershner had a strong scoring chance in the 73
rd minute that went just wide left. Woodward picked up two more saves in the second half to finish with seven.
Villanova will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 14
th when they travel to Colgate. Kick off is scheduled for 7:00 P.M.
