Pirates Take Game One 4-0 Over Wildcats

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – Villanova hosted Seton Hall on Thursday afternoon for game one of their final BIG EAST three-game series at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth. A low scoring game led to the Pirates taking a 4-0 win over the Wildcats.

Graduate third baseman Steve Grober and graduate shortstop Craig Larsen put the work in to get on base despite not being drive in for runs. Grober had the strongest performance on the outing going 2-for-4 with a double against his former teammates. Larsen had one hit to advance the runners.

Junior right hander Devin Rivera had an impressive day on the hill tossing for another lengthy 7.0 innings facing 28 batters, throwing 87 pitches, striking out five and picking off one runner. Rivera yielded 10 groundouts and five foul outs while forcing the Pirates to go down in order in three of the seven innings he was on the mound.

The Pirates plated one in the top of the first with some small ball, using a hit by pitch, sacrifice bunt, stolen base and sacrifice fly to take the 1-0 lead. Seton Hall struck again the top of the second with another run across off a solo homer by Staus Pokrovsky for the 2-0 advantage.

Neither team plated a run until the top of the seventh when Jedier Hernandez hit an RBI single through the right side for the Pirates third run of the game. Zack Sylverster followed by hitting a sacrifice fly RBI for the fourth and final run of the game.

The Wildcats managed four hits on the game and found their way into scoring position but could not cash in any runs to fall to Seton Hall 4-0 in game one of the series.

UP NEXT: The 'Cats return to action on Friday May 19 at Villanova Ballpark for game two of their BIG EAST series versus Seton Hall. First pitch is set for 1 pm.
