ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Villanova competed in seven matches over the weekend at Navy's Blue and Gold Invitational.
In the "A" singles flight, graduate Sophie Edwards made it to the quarterfinals where she lost the first set to Navy's Sylvia Eklund, 2-6, before rebounding in the second, 6-3, but ultimately fell in the third, 6-10. Junior
Maggie Gehrig was defeated in the quarterfinals by Makaila Cheng from Navy in a close straight-set fight, 4-6, 3-6.
The "B" flight had sophomore
Lauren Monti take a 1-4 first set win over Navy's Emma Gu but fell in the next two sets, 4-2 and 10-7.
Flight "C" was represented by freshman
Olivia Corcoran who beat players from George Washington, Mount St. Mary and Navy. She made it to the finals where she faced George Washington's Solange Skeene and came out on top, falling 4-6 in the first flight but closed out with 6-4, 10-8 wins in the second and third.
In flight "D",
Savie Seebald went up against Seton Hall's Rachel Benoualid and lost 4-6, 3-6 in the quarterfinals. Senior
Valieriia Kornieva defeated opponents from Lehigh, Georgetown and Navy before she fell to Georgetown's Molly Evans by 6-7, 6-2, 6-10 in the finals.
Flight "B" on the doubles side was very successful for the Wildcats. Sophomore
Maddie Hills and
Valieriia Kornieva beat duos from Lehigh and Navy before they fell to Carolyn Schaefer and Tatiana Zelenko from Georgetown, 4-6. After the duo of
Maggie Gehrig and
Savie Seebald fought and overcame pairs from Georgetown and Towson, they faced Georgetown's Schaefer and Zelenko in the finals. The Wildcat pair came out on top for this flight due to an injury from Georgetown.
The Wildcats will be attending the Cissie Leary Invite this weekend held in Philadelphia, Pa.
