Wildcats Took Game One In Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, OHIO– Villanova holds off comeback by Xavier to win game one of their series, 8-5 in Cincinnati.
 
In game one of this series, the runs started out slow. After two innings there was no score between the teams.  That all changed in the top of the third.
 
Michael Whooley broke the scoreless tie with a two-run shot to left center. The Wildcats added another in the inning after John Whooley grounded out to first, allowing Jack O'Reilly to score from third base.
 
Xavier answered in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own to make the score 3-1.
 
Villanova kept their foot on the pedal in the fourth with three more runs.  M. Whooley added another RBI with a double to left field scoring AJ Hansen.  The other two runs came from Jack O'Reilly as he hit a double down the left field line, scoring M. Whooley and Cam Hassert.
 
The Musketeers made a comeback, scoring the next four runs of the game.  After a sac fly made the game 6-2, Connor Misch hit a two-run home run in the eighth to bring the score within two runs, 6-4. A throwing error by Villanova brought their lead to one run after eight innings of play.
 
In the top of the ninth with two outs, Jason Neff put a dagger into the hearts of The Musketeers with a two-run shot to give us our final score of 8-5.
 
Nova Notes
  • Michael Whooley went 2-4 with three RBI, a double and a two-run home run.
  • Jack O'Reilly added two RBI after a double in the fourth inning. The senior went 2-3 with a double and two RBI.
  • Starting pitcher Luke McCollough pitched five innings allowing only two hits and one run.
  • Jason Neff hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning.

  • In the eighth, Connor Misch hit a two-run home run, 6-4.
  • Christiansen reached on a throwing error, Hendrickson scored in the eighth, 6-5.
  • In the ninth, Jason Neff hit a two-run homer to left field, 8-5.
