SANTRY, Dublin, Ireland—A pair of Villanova teammates raced in the same heat of the 1500 meters on Saturday afternoon at the 152
nd National Senior Championships at Morton Stadium. The duo of
Charlie O'Donovan and
Sean Donoghue comfortably moved on to Sunday's final in a close race where the top four qualifiers were separated by less than six-tenths of a second at the finish line.
O'Donovan won the fourth and final heat of the 1500 meters in 3:54.28 and Donoghue was third with a time of 3:54.57 in a field of 13 runners. The top four finishers in each heat moved on to the final. O'Donovan wrapped up a sensational collegiate career earlier this month at the NCAA Championships and then immediately headed to Belgium to prepare for the National Senior Championships this weekend. Donoghue is a rising senior on the Villanova roster who has qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary in the 1500 meters in each of the last three years.
Back in their home country for the national championships, O'Donovan and Donoghue each ran for their hometown clubs. Donoghue raced for Dublin City Harriers A.C. and O'Donovan represented Leevale A.C. which has produced Villanova head coach
Marcus O'Sullivan and former Wildcats standout
Ken Nason among others. Nason coached O'Donovan in high school prior to running for O'Sullivan in college. All three Villanovans are sub-four minute milers.
