EDISON, N.J. – After an outstanding performance across five games in California,
Layla Canales was named the MAAC Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
The Florida native starred on both sides of the ball as Villanova played to a 4-1 record during their time on the west coast, including a sweep of the Convergence Tournament.
Canales scored 13 goals and added four assists. Three of those goals were scored on penalty attempts from the 5M line.
On defense, she tallied six steals and three field blocks while also drawing an exclusion.
She recorded two standout games during the weekend, one against McKendree and another in the singular away match against CSUN.
Against the Bearcats in the third game of the Convergence Tournament, she helped the Wildcats cruise to victory by scoring five goals and totaling two steals.
In Sunday's match against Cal State Northridge, Canales scored four goals, added both an assist and a steal, and had two blocks.
With Canales' nomination, the Wildcats have now won their most MAAC Weekly Awards in a season, with 5, as well as tying their season high with two Rookie of the Week awards in one season.

The 'Cats return home to the Villanova Swim Complex this upcoming weekend for Alumni Day as they will play two matches on Saturday, March 8. The first is an exhibition game against the Toronto Golden Jets at 9:00 A.M. In the afternoon, the Wildcats will face off against Salem University at 3:30 P.M., with the alumni game immediately following.
