Villanova To Retire Schafer's Jersey

Jan. 6, 2000

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Bob Schafer, a Villanova All-American during a college career that concluded in 1955, will have his jersey retired by the school, athletic director Tim Hofferth announced today.

"Bob played an integral role in creating the basketball tradition we enjoy here today," said Hofferth. "We are delighted to be able to honor his accomplishments with the retirement of his jersey."

Schafer scored 2,094 points in his career, averaging 18.9 ppg in 111 games. He was the school's all-time leading scorer for more than two decades after his graduation until Keith Herron surpassed that number in 1978. Those 2,094 points presently rank third in school history behind all-time scoring leader Kerry Kittles and Herron. His 27.0 ppg scoring average as a junior in 1953-53 remains the highest single season scoring average in Villanova history.

A ceremony to unveil Schafer's jersey will be held at halftime of Villanova's Jan. 15 game against Boston College at the Pavilion. Tipoff is scheduled for noon.
