VILLANOVA, PA - Villanova University baseball players are currently participating in a number of distinguished summer baseball leagues all across the country. Each of these Wildcats are making big impacts for their respective teams and continuing to show that the Villanova baseball name goes hand-in-hand with successful play on the diamond.
After missing the majority of the 2001 season with a shoulder injury, Brian Slocum is back pitching well for the Cotuit Kettleers (5-8 record) of the Cape Cod League. In three appearances, Slocum is 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA, striking out 14 batters in 13 innings of work. Joining Slocum in the Cape Cod League is fellow pitcher Tom Kandybowicz, who is pitching for the Hyannis Mets (5-8). In two starts, Kandybowicz is 1-1 with a 4.09 ERA.
Centerfielder Chris Graziano picked up right where he left off in 2001 for the `Cats, as he is currently batting .283 and is a perfect 13-for-13 in stolen base attempts for the Middletown Giants (5-8) of the Northeast Collegiate Baseball League. Catcher Greg Fater is playing for the Newport Gulls (9-4) of the NECBL and is one-for-eight from the plate in limited action.
Six Villanova players are together in the same league, the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League. Outfielder/pitcher Brian Hearne, shortstop Brian Trotta, infielder Ryan Crammer and pitcher Dan Farino are on the Delaware Valley Gulls, who are 5-9 through their first 14 games this summer. Hearne is currently two-for-14 at the plate and owns a 5.40 ERA in three appearances on the mound. Trotta is batting .258 and has yet to make an error this summer from his shortstop position. Crammer is batting .235 with eight hits in his first 34 at-bats. Making three starts on the mound, Farino is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in 10.2 innings of work.
Two other `Cats joining these four in the ACBL are right-handed pitcher Bob Grzenda and catcher Marshall Canosa. Grzenda has been stellar on the mound for the Scranton Red Soxx (6-10), owning a 1-0 record and a 3.06 ERA. In 17.2 innings of work, he has struck out 16 batters and walked just five. Canosa, who plays for the 12-2 Newburgh Generals, has made six starts and gone three-for-16 at the plate.
Playing out west for Novato Knicks (18-2) of the NBL is right-hander Adrian Schau. Schau, who had an outstanding freshman season for the `Cats, is 2-0 with a 2.86 ERA striking out 11 batters in 14 innings.
