BIG EAST Round One
PALM HARBOR, Fla. - After the first round at the BIG EAST Championships, Villanova sits in a good position tied for fifth after a 301 (+17). They are just eight strokes out of first place with two rounds yet to play at the par-71, 7,340 yard Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Country Club. The Wildcats are tied with Cincinnati and trail Notre Dame who shot a 293 (+9).
The Wildcats also had some strong individual performers in the first round with two of their golfers in the top-20. Sophomore Michael Kania (Haverford, Pa.) had a consistent day with one birdie and three bogeys to finish at 73 (+2) which puts him in a tie for 9th place. Senior Conor Casey (Madison, N.J.) is in a tie for 14th after shooting a 74 (+3) including two birdies.
Rounding out the top five for Villanova are junior Brian Colbert (Cary, Ill.)(76; +5), senior Brendan Kelly (Annapolis, Md.)(78; +7), and sophomore Steve Skurla (Wheaton, Ill.)(85; +14), which placed them in a tie for 24th, 38th, and 58th respectively.
All individuals are chasing Louisville's Karsten Clements and Cincinnati's Joe Kastelic who both shot a 69 (-2) to tie for the first place lead after one day.
The Wildcats will tee off tomorrow in the same time slots as today, beginning at 9:40 a.m. and going every ten minutes after that.
