Box Score March 10, 2017 Box Score
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Senior second baseman Todd Czinege (Overland Park, Kan.) and sophomore catcher Doug deMarrais (Bernardsville, N.J.) each homered and drove in three runs, senior starting pitcher Hunter Schryver (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) struck out nine over seven-plus shutout innings and Villanova (2-10) rolled to a 10-1 win over Iowa (7-5) at North Charlotte Regional Park on Friday afternoon. All nine batters in the Wildcats lineup reached base safely at least once in the rout, and the team finished with a season-high 13 hits.
Czinege and deMarrais hit home runs in consecutive innings to help Villanova build a 5-0 lead by the fourth inning. Czinege also singled in the game to raise his average to .312 for the season, while deMarrais also walked and scored in addition to hitting a sacrifice fly. Freshman left fielder Tyler Bruno (Breinigsville, Pa.) had three hits on the day and junior center fielder David Gulati (Collegeville, Pa.) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two driven in.
The outpouring of offense created a cushion for Schryver (1-3, 2.45 ERA) to work with as he cruised through the early and middle innings of the game. Schryver allowed just three hits and two walks while pitching into the eighth inning in his best start of the season. He has allowed just one earned run spanning 13.0 innings in his last two outings. Junior reliever Ryan Doty (Rye, N.Y.) stranded an inherited runner to end the eighth inning and sophomore Jake Esp (Sugar Grove, Ill.) closed out the game in the ninth.
After consecutive strikeouts to start the top of the third inning in a scoreless game, senior right fielder Donovan May (Newark, Del.) worked a walk to extend the inning and Bruno singled up the middle. Czinege followed and smashed the first pitch he saw far over the 400-foot sign in straightaway center field. His blast was the Wildcats first home run of the season and the 11th of Czinege's career.
May continues to set a tone for the Villanova offense in the leadoff spot of the batting order. He went to a full count in four of his six plate appearances on Friday, and saw 30 pitches in all for the day. In the top of the first inning, he battled through a seven-pitch at-bat which ended with him smoking a double to the wall in right-center field.
In the fourth inning, sophomore first baseman David Rodgers (West Chester, Pa.) was hit by a pitch with one out and deMarrais followed by hitting a 3-1 pitch over the fence in left-center to make the score 5-0. The first home run of his collegiate career was hit just to the left of where Czinege's home run landed an inning earlier.
Villanova stayed in control of the game as Schryver shut down a Hawkeyes offense which was averaging 6.5 runs per game. He retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced, had at least one strikeout in every full inning he pitched except for the fifth, and did not allow any runners past second base. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Schryver struck out Matt Hoeg with two men on to end the inning. He also got Mason McCoy to pop up to shallow right field in the home half of the fifth after allowing a single and a walk with two outs.
The sixth Wildcats run of the game also came after there were two outs and nobody on. That was the situation in the top of the sixth inning against Iowa reliever Kyle Shimp, who then walked three straight batters to load the bases. He next faced Bruno, who beat out a ball hit deep in the hole at second base for an RBI single.
Sophomore designated hitter JP Radvany (Lawrenceville, N.J.) reached on an error to start the seventh inning, and there were runners at second and third with none out after an error was committed on a sacrifice bunt attempt by sophomore third baseman Juan De La Espriella (Westin, Fla.). Gulati followed with a two-run single to expand the Villanova lead to 8-0, while deMarrais hit a sacrifice fly later in the frame for a ninth run. Gulati tripled to right-center in the ninth inning and scored on a two-out RBI single by freshman shortstop Timothy Lilly (Glen Ellyn, Ill.).
Hawkeyes starting pitcher Nick Gallagher (2-1, 3.67 ERA) allowed eight hits and five earned runs while striking out seven in five innings of work. Zach Fricke hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning which scored Iowa's only run of the game.
The final game of the Wildcats trip to the Sunshine State is on Saturday morning when the team faces Western Michigan at 10 a.m. The game will be played at South County Regional Park in Punta Gorda.
