Villanova/Xavier Post-Game Notes

April 7, 2017

Recap | Box Score

  • Villanova rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning after trailing 2-0 and being three outs away from having a perfect game thrown against them. The first 24 batters of the game for the Wildcats were dispatched via 16 strikeouts, seven groundball outs and one fly out. Villanova was the victim of a perfect game on March 4, 2014 in a 17-0 loss at Miami (Fla.). The last time the Wildcats were no-hit in BIG EAST action was in a 9-0 loss at home to Rutgers on May 16, 2003. That game was the second of a doubleheader and was stopped after just five innings when the game became official.
  • Villanova produced its 27th walk-off win at the Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth since the stadium opened in 2003. The team had three walk-off victories last season, although the final plays of those games included two throwing errors and a wild pitch. The last time the Wildcats had a walk-off hit at their home field was on March 17, 2013 when Luke Emling hit an RBI single to drive in Derrick May, Jr. in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 4-3 win over Marist.
  • The last time Villanova won a game that it trailed after eight innings also occurred during the first weekend of BIG EAST play. It was last year in the finale of a three-game series against Butler when the Wildcats trailed 2-0 going to the bottom of the ninth before rallying for three runs and a 3-2 victory. In that game, Emmanuel Morris tied the game with a one-out, two-run single and Max Beermann grounded into a fielder's choice which resulted in a throwing error that allowed the game-winning run to score.
  • Villanova is 3-0 in one-run games this season and has tallied back-to-back 3-2 victories over Rutgers and Xavier in its last two outings. Last season the Wildcats were 6-8 in one-run games. The last season in which Villanova had a winning record in one-run contests was 2012 (9-7).
  • With today's victory, the Wildcats improved to 15-18 (.455) all-time in BIG EAST openers. Since the BIG EAST aligned to its current format in 2014, Villanova is 6-4 during the opening weekend of conference play.
  • The game-winning single by Todd Czinege moved him into a tie for seventh place in school history with Gary Scott (1987-89) with 218 career hits. He is seven hits behind Steve Young (1993-96), who is in sixth place with 225 hits. Czinege did pass Young in career at-bats and now has 694 for his career. That ranks eighth in school history and Czinege trails former teammate Kevin Jewitt (2013-16), who is in seventh with 710 at-bats.
