PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - After a pregame ceremony recognizing the team's graduating seniors, it was back to business on the field as Villanova (13-29, 4-10 BIG EAST) hosted a doubleheader against Seton Hall (27-20, 9-8 BIG EAST) at the Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth on Saturday afternoon. In the seven-inning opening game, the Pirates scored single runs in the second and third innings to tally a 2-0 victory. The nightcap began just before 2 p.m.

Senior starting pitcher Hunter Schryver (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) pitched the first complete game of his career and scattered six hits while walking three and striking out five. The only runs charged to his account came on a safety squeeze up the first base line in the second inning and a two-out, run-scoring single in the top of the third. Schryver (4-6, 1.97 ERA) has allowed two earned runs or less in nine of his 11 starts this season.

A leadoff walk to Al Molina and a single to right by Mike Alescio set the table for Seton Hall in the top of the second inning. Chris Villa sacrificed back to Schryver to move the runners up to second and third with one away, and Mike Caputo followed with a bunt towards first base for another sacrifice which brought home Molina with the game's first run. Caputo got ahead in the count 2-1 before showing bunt, and he made just soft enough contact that there was no play at the plate.

Ryan Ramiz drew a leadoff walk to start the top of the third inning and stole second with one out. Schryver got Matt Fortin on a fly to left for the second out, but cleanup hitter Matt Toke was up next and lined the first pitch he saw into center field to drive in Ramiz with a two-out run. Schryver shut the door after that hit, and wound up retiring 12 of the last 16 batters of the game.

Pirates starting pitcher Cullen Dana (5-3, 3.30 ERA) pitched a four-hitter with one walk and a hit batter for the shutout. He struck out eight and allowed just four singles in the game. The best scoring chance for the Wildcats came in the bottom of the third inning when freshman shortstop Timothy Lilly (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and junior center fielder David Gulati (Collegeville, Pa.) each had singles. Both were thrown out on the bases however, preventing Villanova from putting together more of a rally.

Lilly singled to left-center to start the home half of the third but was picked off on a throw from the catcher after the second pitch to Gulati, who eventually singled through the left side. He was caught stealing second and senior right fielder Donovan May (Newark, Del.) grounded out to end the inning. Lilly went 2-for-2 in the game and May was 1-for-2 while getting hit by a pitch.

The pregame Senior Day ceremony recognized Schryver and May, as well as second baseman Todd Czinege (Overland Park, Kan.), catchers John Fabriziani (Doylestown, Pa.) and Zander Retamar (Boca Raton, Fla.), relief pitchers John Santoianni (Souderton, Pa.) and Brian Trablusi (Malverne, N.Y.), and student manager Harry Roche. They will also be recognized during a special graduation ceremony on campus Sunday evening, as well as at a team banquet following the commencement exercises.
